Is this singer AI? You usually can't tell by listening, so don't rely on your ears. Check the artist's profile for an AI label, look for signs of a real person off the app (concerts, merch, social accounts), and check the artist's photos and cover art.
The question comes up more and more. A new song sounds fine, the artist has thousands of listeners, and yet there's no interview, no tour and no backstory anywhere. Streaming services have started adding labels to help, but each one means something different, and none of them covers everything. Here's what each label tells you, what it doesn't, and how to check an artist yourself.
Key Takeaways
- In a 2025 Ipsos survey for Deezer, 97% of people couldn't tell fully AI-generated songs from a human-made one.
- Spotify's AI Persona badge means the artist's identity may be AI-generated, not how the music was made.
- Signs of a real artist include concert dates, merch and linked social accounts, which Spotify looks for before verifying a profile.
- A missing label doesn't prove an artist is human, because labels rely on self-disclosure and on Spotify's review, which starts with bigger artists.
Can You Tell If a Singer Is AI Just by Listening?
Probably not. In November 2025, the streaming service Deezer published a survey it commissioned from Ipsos. People took a blind test with two AI songs and one real song, and "97% couldn't tell the difference between fully AI-generated music and human-made music". The survey covered 9,000 adults aged 18 to 65 in eight countries.
The same survey found that "More than half (52%) felt uncomfortable" about not being able to tell, and that "80% agree that 100% AI-generated music should be clearly labeled to listeners". So most people want a label, and few can do the job by ear.
There's a lot of AI music to run into. In April 2026, Deezer said it was receiving "almost 75,000 AI-generated tracks per day", "roughly 44% of the daily uploads". Deezer says tracks it detects as AI-generated are automatically removed from its algorithmic recommendations.
Uploads and plays are different things, though. Deezer put AI music at "between 1-3% of the total streams", and said "a majority (85%) of these streams are detected as fraudulent".
What Does Spotify's AI Persona Badge Mean?
In August 2026, Spotify announced an AI Persona badge. In Spotify's words, "The badge signals to listeners that an artist's identity may be AI-generated and does not represent a real person." Spotify said the badge would start appearing in mid-September, on artist profiles (in the banner and the About section), in Search, and on track rows in playlists.
The badge can get there in two ways. Artists can say their profile is an AI Persona through Spotify for Artists, "but we won't rely on self-disclosure alone," Spotify says. It also reviews artist profiles itself. If you tap the badge, you can see whether the artist "transparently shared that they're an AI Persona" or Spotify "had to review and make an informed determination." Artists who get the badge can appeal.
Spotify also says that "By default, Spotify will not include AI Personas in any editorial or algorithmic recommendations." It adds that you won't see AI Personas in your personalized recommendations unless, for example, you follow them. In the same announcement, Spotify said it would also give listeners a way to report profiles they believe are AI Personas.
What the AI Persona badge doesn't tell you
The badge is about who the artist is, not how the songs were made. Spotify is direct about it: "This badge is about the artist's public identity, not about how the music was made." A real singer could use AI tools in the studio and never get the badge. An AI Persona badge means the face and identity on the profile may not be a real person.
A missing badge proves nothing. Spotify says its review starts with artists who have met certain audience thresholds, and a self-disclosure only happens if the artist chooses to make one. Treat the badge as a clue when you see it, and keep checking when you don't.
Is This Artist AI? How to Check a Spotify Profile
Look for the opposite signal too. In April 2026, Spotify launched a Verified by Spotify badge that "shows an artist profile has been reviewed" and "meets Spotify's criteria for authenticity and trust."
Spotify says it looks for "an identifiable artist presence both on and off-platform, like concert dates, merch, and linked social accounts". At launch, "profiles that appear to primarily represent AI-generated or AI-persona artists are not eligible for verification."
Those same signs are worth checking yourself, on any app:
- Concerts. Are there real, upcoming shows at named venues, and can you find photos or videos from past ones posted by fans?
- A life off the app. Do the linked social accounts go back more than a few weeks, with posts from rehearsals, studios or the road?
- Merch and credits. Is there a shop, a label, a producer or a songwriter you can look up?
- The release history. Spotify's Artist Details section "highlights key artist details like career milestones, release activity, and touring activity". Check whether that history looks like a career or a sudden flood.
None of these alone settles it. Not every real artist tours, and a new singer may have a short history. But an artist with thousands of listeners and no trace of a real person anywhere is worth a closer look.
Was The Velvet Sundown AI? What NBC News Reported
In July 2025, NBC News reported on The Velvet Sundown, a band that "has amassed more than 850,000 listeners on Spotify in a matter of weeks". According to its social media profiles, the band "appears to have first emerged in June". NBC wrote that "The images put forward by the band all look like they were created by artificial intelligence."
NBC also reported that Deezer said "100% of The Velvet Sundown's tracks were created using AI." NBC also noted that "On Spotify, the band has a 'Verified Artist' badge".
Spotify's current Verified by Spotify badge, announced in April 2026, has a stated rule on this: at launch, "profiles that appear to primarily represent AI-generated or AI-persona artists are not eligible for verification."
How to Check an Artist's Photos and Cover Art for AI
Photos are where you can test something yourself. If an artist's profile pictures, press shots or cover art look too smooth or oddly perfect, save one and run it through the IsItAI.com AI image detector. You'll get a result such as "Likely AI-generated" or "Likely human-made". That's a probability, not proof, and it only checks the image. We don't check songs or voices.
Read the result carefully in both directions. A "Likely AI-generated" result on a photo of someone is a reason to look further, not something to post as an accusation. And a "Likely human-made" result doesn't prove the artist is real, because a fake profile can use real photos of someone else.
A few things to keep in mind:
- AI cover art isn't proof of an AI singer. Real musicians use AI artwork too. A photo that claims to show the singer is more telling than an illustrated album cover.
- Check several photos, not one. One result is one clue. Checking a few different photos of the artist tells you more than a single shot.
- Look at the details. Our guide on how to tell if art is AI covers what to look for in artwork, and Is This Image AI or Real? explains how to see where else an image has appeared online.
Is This Influencer AI? Instagram and YouTube AI Labels
The same question applies to accounts, not just singers. In August 2026, TechCrunch reported a new Instagram "AI-generated profile" label, "meant to tell users that the person featured on a profile was generated or substantially created with AI." TechCrunch added that "creators who don't properly label an AI-generated profile could see their reach reduced." Using AI to edit photos or polish captions doesn't require the label.
YouTube works on disclosure too. Its help page says, "We require creators to disclose AI-generated or altered content that seems realistic." For AI-generated music or photorealistic content, YouTube says a label may also appear in the video player.
Some places have simply said no. In January 2026, Bandcamp announced that "Music and audio that is generated wholly or in substantial part by AI is not permitted on Bandcamp," and asked users who spot it to use its reporting tools.
The weak spot is shared: Spotify's badge and YouTube's labels both start with creators disclosing AI use themselves. A label is useful when it's there. When it isn't, you've learned very little.
Is This Singer AI or Real? A Quick Checklist
- Look for a label. On Spotify, an AI Persona badge on the profile, in Search or on track rows. On Instagram, an "AI-generated profile" label.
- Tap it. On Spotify, see whether the artist disclosed it or Spotify decided.
- Look for the opposite signal. A Verified by Spotify badge means Spotify says the profile was reviewed and meets its criteria. That's a clue, not proof.
- Follow the trail. Concert dates, fan videos, merch, credits and social accounts with a long history.
- Check the photos in an AI image check. A result is a clue, not proof.
- If you still can't tell, say so. "I couldn't verify this artist" is an honest answer.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can you tell if a singer is AI?
Rarely by ear: in a 2025 Ipsos survey for Deezer, 97% of people couldn't tell fully AI-generated songs from a human-made one. Check for an AI Persona badge on Spotify, look for concerts, merch and long-running social accounts, and run the artist's photos through an AI image check.
What does the AI Persona badge on Spotify mean?
Spotify says the badge signals that an artist's identity may be AI-generated and does not represent a real person. It's about the artist's public identity, not how the music was made. Tap it to see whether the artist disclosed it or Spotify made the determination after a review.
If an artist has no AI label, are they real?
Not necessarily. Labels depend on the artist disclosing AI use or on a platform review, and Spotify says its review starts with artists who have met certain audience thresholds. Treat a missing label as no information, and look for signs of a real person instead, such as concert dates, merch, credits and linked social accounts.
Does Spotify recommend AI artists?
Spotify says that by default it will not include AI Personas in any editorial or algorithmic recommendations, so you won't see them in your personalized recommendations unless, for example, you follow them. Deezer says it also removes tracks it detects as AI-generated from its algorithmic recommendations.
Can IsItAI.com check if a song is AI?
No. The IsItAI.com AI image detector checks images, such as an artist's profile photos, press shots or cover art, and the AI text detector checks writing. Each result is a probability, such as "Likely AI-generated", not proof. For songs, rely on platform labels and the artist's real-world trail.
